| I was born in Ohio and raised in S. California but essentially moved into N. California after I went to Berkeley. I grew up in Westwood
and my parents owned a restaurant in Hollywood on Vine St. They put all
their five girls and one boy in the movies. My three older sisters were a
trio - won amateur hours, cut records and all. I used to sit on the stairs
in our entry and listen to them practice for hours so I love old show
tunes. But somehow art took over in our family - lots of artists,
practicing and non. Now I have a daughter and son of my own and I can't
help but paint and draw them.
I started drawing figures and self portraits from an early age. I
guess I am primarily a painter but I also love to sculpt the figure and
face. I paint everything....landscape, figures, still-life, portrait and
all combined. Each media and subject seems to complement the other. I try
to capture stillness and the essential quality of a thing when I paint.
But I also use images as symbols and like to see evidence of the brush and
the energy of art. At times, I use whatever materials inspire me to
quickly express feelings.
One of the ways I stay excited about painting is by being in nature
while I do it. I need the quiet of my studio but I like to get out of it
too. I especially love morning and late daylight and I never stop being
thrilled by the reflection of light on water. But I guess I find
the figure and face most fascinating and their images a vehicle for self
reflection.
I am also a Registered Art Therapist and I have used a multitude of
art techniques in psychiatric settings while working with all ages and a
variety of conditions. I have seen art stimulate, allow for expression,
provide for mystery, communication, and the appreciation and wonder of our
complex world.
