FACES & FIGURES

Capturing a look, a gesture, the mood of a person has fascinated and challenged me for years. I most enjoy drawing and painting the face but how the entire body connects and conveys the essence of a being is what I seek when a model or a friend or family pose for me.

Some of the face and figure pieces are studies done for an oil painting completed in my studio. But many - and there are countless - are spontaneous, follow-your-feel-for-it works that have the energy of a timed sitting, one that you have to get down or not.

And often in figure groups there's a delightful, contagious atmosphere of sharing information, laughter and the intense moments of focus. The models become part of the group not the object and their fascinating lives and character lend to the creative energy.

I'm grateful for the opportunities to paint and draw others - I never tire of the experience - it's always different and exciting.
