SCULPTURE

My interest in depicting the figure naturally led to sculpting. When I started constructing the figure three dimensionally, I learned so much more about painting and drawing it. I had studied artistic anatomy, center of balance, gesture in repose but sculpting taught me these things in a tactile, hands-on way that translated into a more solid two dimensional image.

While sculpting, the clay seemed to drain tension out of me through my hands. As I worked and studied form and connected sinew, something connected inside of me as well. It calmed my mind and demanded full focus so that thoughts would often flow more evenly and sometimes even lead to revelation. The elemental aspect of turning clay into form is a reminder of how we all came into being.
