| STILL LIFES In a world that seems enamored with images that shock and disturb, I am more compelled than ever to quiet my mind and still the waters of my soul by painting pictures of external reality with classical oil technique. I use this time-tested technique to paint still life, landscape, portraits and dream-like life-size figures. But, for me, painting still life is most conducive to inner stillness. I seek out small, quiet objects that allow me to see the beauty of form through light and shadow. I purposefully keep the composition simple so that the often overlooked object can be seen and appreciated. I underpaint the form and composition then enjoy the challenge of applying color in the correct value. Finally, I apply glazes to enhance color and deepen tones. As I paint, I become aware of the miraculous complexity of a simple object. The object as well as the act of painting are complex, simple, quiet, and yet profound. The process becomes a metaphor and the painting becomes a symbol for the simplicity and stillness I seek in my life. close window |
